EXHIBITION OF THE WEEK: TONY CATANY’S PHOTOGRAPHY

Very few photographers take as much inspiration from painting as Toni Catany.

The artist, from Mallorca, is as accomplished with a brush as he is a camera, hence why he’s spent much of his career blending the aesthetics of both mediums.

Catany’s photography largely deals with portraits. His subjects are often realised in dramatic close-up, their intense gazes clearly reflecting Catany’s work in oils. These figures look more like they’ve sat for a painting than posed for a photo, and the light cast on their faces is reminiscent of the tones in a still-life canvas – the composition Catany prefers to create in his brush-work.

Tony Catany: D’anar i tornar (which translates roughly as ‘Going and Getting Back’) contains many works unseen until now. It runs at La Pedrera until 17 July. Entrance is €4 (€2 conc.)
