The sweet sounds of jazz drifting through the warm Venetian air and out across the waters of the lagoon signal the amazing Venice Jazz Festival in July. The festival is a fabulously relaxed affair and is held at a few venues across the city including Saint Mark’s Square, Gran Teatro La Fenice and Teatro Goldoni.
Jazz is one type of music that you may not think matches the historic character of Venice but there is in fact a very healthy jazz movement here and the summer is the best time of year to catch some smooth sounds.
But if your visit is not around July don’t worry as the city has plenty of jazz to listen to. Veneto Jazz is a series of jazz gigs held across the city throughout the summer at a range of venues. From large concert halls to tiny intimate clubs you will find something to whet your palette.
You can expect to hear artists like Ornella Vanoni who is a jazz and pop legend in Italy with a string of hit albums and singles. Another big name who has performed here is Michael Nyman who is predominantly famous for his many successful scores from films including “The Piano”.
Talent from the local area that often graces the Venetian jazz stages includes Rita Marcotulli – Luciano Biondini Duo, and Venetian Fisorchestra “Giorgione”, as well as international acts like the Cuban musical act Grupo Company Segundo and Tedeschi Trucks Band.
So if jazz is your thing then being in Venice during the summer jazz season will be right up your street.
