New Year’s Day Swim
New Year’s is a fantastic time to be in Venice. The celebrations are as wild as the fireworks are magical. That said, the Venetians do have their quirky side and if you can manage to get out of bed on New Year’s Day in the early morning then head down to the Lido for the spectacular sight of crowds of swimmers taking a dip.
The event starts around 9am so you will have to head out early. Alternatively, do not go to bed the night before, grab a hearty breakfast, and join in. The swim is meant to symbolise the washing away of the old and a kind of rebirth as the brave emerge from the water. But it is probably also a great way to clear a hangover.
The Lido is a resort place in Venice and you will find loads of hotels with bars and restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat; it is a great place to spend a day if you have time.
Try Ristorante La Tavernetta which is just a little way back from the beach, on Via Morosini, and not far from the Hotel Excelsior. This is a cosy, relaxed little place with a select menu but the food is cooked fresh and you will often see locals having a meal here.
For somewhere you can sit back with a drink and enjoy the views of Venice across the water try the Villa Laguna on Via Sandro Gallo. If the weather is good you can sit outside on the patio and enjoy some sun.
To get to the Lido catch the blue ferry from Zittelle and stay on to the end. This will drop you at Lido SME and you can walk to the beach from here.
