Festa di San Martino
You may notice an abundance of highly elaborate horsey themed cookies in bakers’ windows. They’re delicious and are baked to celebrate the Festa di San Martino (Saint Martin’s Day). This godly man cut his cloak in half to give to a freezing beggar while he was travelling on horseback (hence the cookies).
St Martin is also thanked for the new wine traditionally opened on this day and a spell of warmer weather, so sit back enjoy a glass or two of vino in the late autumn sun.
