Art Night Venezia
It’s late. The sun has just sunk sedately below the horizon, you are quietly wandering around the ancient, winding streets of Venice and you come upon a black clad artist with a box of red grapes and some white paper. As you watch, the mysterious person delicately steps into the box of grapes and proceeds to squish them between their toes, then places their feet on the paper. This is art happening right before your eyes.
Art Night Venezia is a wonderful blend of modern art themes against the backdrop of beautiful Venice architecture. The warm summer evening in Venice is the perfect time to join a tour group and learn a bit about art that happens in the city.
Many of the art centres, churches and museums in Venice will be opening their doors for free for special exhibitions, concerts and films. There will be free guided tours in English as well as Italian and many places will stay open until midnight. A good place to start would be the stunning Basilica di San Marco, which will be right in the centre of the action and is less than fifteen minutes from Generator Venice.
If you are looking for a bite to eat mid-evening and you happen to be in the San Polo area then try the legendary Antico Forno on Ruga Vecchia San Giovanni. It is a tiny place and you won’t get to sit down but the pizza is widely tipped as the best in Venice. You can buy by the slice from around 3Euros and you can also get a great bottle of wine to wash it down with.
If you are near Saint Mark’s Square try the Caffe Centrale on San Marco Piscina Frezzeria. You may find the location pushes up the price a little but this up-to-date place has the feel of a trendy New York bar. If you can, request a seat outside as the view across the small canal nearby is lovely.
