71st Venice International Film Festival
Organised by La Biennale di Venezia, the 71st Venice International Film Festival is one of the most important film events on the calendar. It’s taking place on Venice Lido on Lungomare G. Marconi between Grand Hotel Des Bains and Hotel Excelsior, so you won’t have to travel far to see some quality international cinema.
The full line-up of films will be released in July, however if last year’s festival is anything to go by, it’s sure to be entertaining.Last year the festival opened with the world premiere of Oscar-winning movie “Gravity”, and drama film “Philomena” starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan also made an appearance. Other films last year included thriller “Night Moves”, which follows three activists scheming to blow up a dam, and “Under The Skin”, an interesting story based on a sci-fi novel about an alien sent to earth to capture men.
The closing film for this year’s festival is a Chinese movie called “The Golden Era”, which is about the life of female writer Xiao Hong in the late 1930s and early 1940s. On the closing night of the festival, a jury will award several prizes to the feature-length films in Competition, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay among others.
After you’ve been thoroughly entertained, there are a few places to go for dinner on Lido. For some top quality seafood try Trattoria Andri on Via Lepanto. With excellent service and even better food, it’s a great place to treat yourself to something special.
Getting to the film festival is easy – just take the vaporetto from Zittelle to Lido S.M.E. and follow your nose down Granviale Santa Maria Elisabetta, turning right onto Lungomare G. Marconi.
