Totally Thames 2014
If you are in London you cannot fail to miss the River Thames winding its way through England’s capital. In September there is a whole month of events dedicated to celebrating this famous waterway in the shape of Totally Thames.
As you would expect many of the events are water themed and based with art, music, regattas, festivals and more. Here are a few of the highlights to give you a flavour of the festival:
Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Festival 5th – 9th September
This free event is a chance to see some history in action. The graceful tall ships will be plying the waters of the great river from Greenwich, Royal Arsenal Woolwich, Greenwich Peninsula to West India Dock. You can even go aboard some of the ships and experience life from a sailor’s point of view.
The Great River Race 27th September
Another free event is the Great River Race. From lunchtime teams of rowers will race from Millwall to Ham in Surrey along the Thames.
Handel’s Fireworks Music and Illuminations 14th September
Handel’s famous Music is set to a spectacular fireworks display over Hampton Court Palace. A magical evening in an outstanding, historic setting.
More London Free Film Festival 3rd – 26th September
The Scoop at More London is an outdoor amphitheatre right on the banks of the Thames by Tower Bridge. On selected nights there will be great classic films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Goonies as well as up to date films like Philomena and Nelson Mandela – Long Walk To Freedom. And the best bit is it’s completely free!
This is just a tiny few of the loads of events, with others including Mapping London, an exhibition in the Oxo Tower Wharf of rare maps of London and the Richmond Panoramic Cycle Tour, which takes in Richmond Hill and King Henry’s mound, two royal deer parks and a visit to quirky Gothic Strawberry Hill House.
Most of the events can be reached using the London Underground from King’s Cross Tube Station which is only a few minutes’ walk from Generator London.
