The London Ice Sculpting Festival
Canary Wharf has a reputation for up-to-date architecture and a modern no-nonsense feel, but this January the area will be haunted by the beautiful, ghostly and inspiring art of the London Ice Sculpting Festival.
You will see the artists at work and the world class masters come from all over the world to test their carving skills and artistic imagination against each other.
There are 3 competitions over the weekend, each with its own challenges. The Single Block competition has the theme “River Life” and is more of a speed challenge for sculptors. The Big Block competition has the theme “Fabulous Fashion!” and you, the public, will get a chance to vote for the winner!
We think the Freestyle Competition on Friday afternoon is probably the one to watch as the sculptors will be allowing their artistic side full flow onto the ice. Last year’s theme was “Wonders of the Universe” and the winner was a team from USA with their work entitled “Infinity”.
If you are feeling particularly inspired and arty then there are master classes where you can have a go at your own ice penguin or polar bear. Be careful of those fingers though!
If you are feeling peckish or your fingers are getting a bit numb treat yourself to a warming hot chocolate and pastry at the Winter Market, or take a spin on the ice rink where you can wander through the trees at your own pace.
Don’t forget to take plenty of pictures as, just like Frosty the Snowman, sadly these stunning ice sculptures are only temporary. The best bit that is that it is completely free to get in so you can stroll around at your leisure for a look at a very unique and transient art form.
