The solid thunk of ball against the racket and the crowd holds its breath – the umpire gives the nod and the winner throws racket in the air in sheer exhausted joy. Tennis at the O2 is not the sunny experience of Wimbledon but much more dramatic as the audience is in darkness while the players are in the spotlight below.
