The Alternative London Tour
When you think of London you may have an image in your mind of iconic places old and new like The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, the London Eye against the skyline and St Paul’s Cathedral. These places are great and worth a visit if you have time but London is also chock full of little interesting tales that most tourists do not see.
So if you are the kind of person that likes to walk on the wild side and avoid the well-beaten tourist track then the Alternative London Tour will definitely be up your street. Here is a sneak preview of the tour, to give you a flavour of the humour of the tour guides and the unusual stuff to be seen:
The tour is primarily based in the East End of London among the gritty brick houses and tiny meandering streets of one of the arty bits of the city. Be warned the walking tours take about 2 hours so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and it is probably a good idea to bring a jacket as well in case of rain – this is England after all.
There are bike tours available if you prefer two wheels to two feet but as they last about 3.5 hours you will need to make sure you are comfortable in the saddle.
One of the innovative things about the Alternative London Tour is that you decide what to pay on the day. You do have to book in advance but then after the tour you can give the guide as little or as much as you feel it was worth.
The tours all start and finish near Spitalfields Market which is also worth a look once you have finished your tour. To get there from Generator London takes just over half an hour on the tube or bus. The 205 bus from Somers Town stop will take you right to the Spitalfields Primrose Street stop and the market is only a 5 minute walk from there.
