If you enjoy a good gay pride event, but feel they sometimes miss a certain something – a German Christmas market for example – do not fear! You can now combine the two with Winter Pride in Hamburg. Set up in St. Georg, this market is famous for its friendly and tolerant atmosphere, so it’s sure to get your into the Christmas spirit.
Expect to find the usual delights of a Christmas market including mulled wine, punch,tasty nibbles, andart and jewellery for sale – a great opportunity to make a start on your Christmas shopping if you haven’t already.
There will also be a great line-up of music and entertainment at the weekends, and the full program of entertainment will be available on the Winter Pride website from the end of October. One of the highlights will be “Schrottwichtein” (Rubbish Secret Santa) where visitors can exchange their least-liked Christmas presents.
Groups from gay and lesbian community will be in attendance for anyone who wants to participate in discussions or ask questions. Part of the market’s profits will go to support groups within the gay and lesbian community, so this fun event is also for a great cause.
The market will be open from 25th November until 30th December, closing only between 24th and 26th December. Opening hours are 12pm – 10pm Sunday – Thursday, and 12pm – 12am on Fridays and Saturdays. If you want a sit down meal while you’re there, try Casa Alfredo just across the road. They do great Italian food that you can watch being cooked, and as there is no menu there are plenty of meal options to choose from.
You won’t have to go far to find Winter Pride – it’s just a five minute walk from Generator Hamburg on the corner of Lange Reihe and Kirchenallee. Just turn right out of the hostel onto Steintorplatzand right again onto Kirchenallee, and follow your nose up the road.
