The Alster Lake is the heart of Hamburg, and alongside the Harbour Festival and HamburgerDom the annual summer Alster Lake festival is the biggest in the year. The Alstervergnügen is all about the Inner lake area and you will not be able to miss the festival around the Binnenalster.
As the lake is the focus of the festival, you will not be surprised to find out that many of the events involve water sports. Over the weekend you can see wake-boarding and water-skiing as well as rowing and sailing. One of the big highlights is the spectacular firework display at the end of each evening which is worth staying up for.
The area around the Binnenalster will be packed with entertainments – from multiple music stages, amazing acrobats and street performers to dance floors where you can throw your own unique shapes to hot tracks.
Feeling peckish? Then take a stroll down the Culinary Mile also on Jungfernstieg and you are sure to find something to tickle your taste buds. Many of the more up-market eateries in Hamburg set up stalls of taster dishes so you can savour some top notch food for a fraction of the price. If that is not your style then there are also plenty of deli stalls and snack bars to satisfy your appetite.
On each of the days the festival kicks off in the morning and then winds up late at midnight, so there is plenty of time to wander around the stalls, take in the views across the lake or join in the dancing and general merriment.
Binnenalster is within easy stumbling distance from Generator Hamburg as it is only a 20 minute walk away or a 7 minute U-bahn ride from the Hauptbahnhof Süd if you are not feeling that energetic.
