Round Amager Strandpark
Amager beach and park is a beautiful spot to visit if you are in Copenhagen at any time but this July the normally relaxed beach will be filled with excited kayakers. The Round Amager Strandpark Race is Denmark’s only kayak race, which will bring in water sport enthusiasts from all over the peninsular.
The race, organised by Sundby Kajakklub, is 20km long and the route runs around the bay 4 times so you will have plenty of opportunity to cheer your favourites. There will be food stalls if you are peckish, music to entertain and a running commentary for those times when the kayakers are out of view.
The race starts at noon so this gives you loads of time to head to the beach and stake out a cosy picnic spot. This is a fantastic way to spend a sunny Saturday in Copenhagen.
To get to Amager Beach take a bus or train to Øresundsvej, it is only about 15 minutes south of the main city centre and if you are feeling energetic it is only an hour’s walk.
Once the excitement is over if you are looking for a bite to eat or a drink then only a couple of minutes’ walk away is Amagerbrogade. This is the main drag and has copious eateries to match anyone’s taste or appetite.
Try Piccola Italia for some no nonsense, stone-baked genuine Italian pizza. They are known locally for their great pizzas and you may find the place pretty busy especially at lunchtime.
For a more traditional Danish place Restaurang Kareten will do the trick for good sized portions that won’t break the bank. While the food is fantastic the huge beer selection is the big draw here.
For a lighter meal you can’t go wrong with Ingolfs Kaffebar. This cosy cafe has a lively atmosphere and they often have concerts in the evenings to entertain the punters as they sip their freshly brewed coffee.
