Kulturhaven is Copenhagen’s celebration of the beautiful harbour area of the city. The festival focuses on the idea of healthy citizens making a healthy city, with sport and games at the heart of the entertainment.
There are hundreds of events taking place throughout the first week of August. Events range from paddle-board races (okay, it doesn’t have to be a race if you don’t want) and Kayak Polo in the harbour, to Taekwondo and fencing beside it. The water in the harbour is so clean that you can swim in it, so take advantage of fun water activities like jumping into the harbour from a trampoline by the Longebro Bridge.
There’s live music throughout the festival from the usual Danish rock and Scandi-pop to more exotic noises from the Oriental Drum ‘n’ Dance society and the Flamenco Society of Copenhagen.
Other highlights include GAME Denmark who bring their own brand of urban Danish culture to the festival in the form of break-dance, parkour and basketball. Join in you’re feeling brave! For something a little less energetic, try out the exhibitions at the historic DieselHouse museum or take a guided tour of the area. Take a look at the full program of events to find out exactly what’s happening over the weekend and when.
If you’ve got time in the evening, take a wander beside the water on the Nyhavn docks. Here you’ll find several bars, many of which run their own micro-breweries with runs of their own limited edition beer and are more than happy to sell you a bottle of it!
The harbour area stretches the length of the city, and you can walk to it in less than ten minutes from Generator Hostel. There are also free waterbuses and shuttle boats to take you between the different festival areas along the harbour.
