Copenhagen will be abuzz with runners and supporters this May as the Nykredit Copenhagen Marathon kicks off. You cannot help but be caught up in the fever pitch excitement as crowds gather to cheer on the athletes.
Many are professional runners but there is also a good proportion of amateurs who are just raising money for a good cause.
Islands Brygge houses the start/finish area and is a great place to pick up on hot tips for winners and feel the exhilaration in the throngs of people. But if you are looking for somewhere to watch that is a little less busy then try the Rosenborg Palace Garden as the route runs right through the middle and you can have a quiet picnic or do a spot of sightseeing while you wait for the pack to reach you. You could use this opportunity to visit some of the outer suburbs like Osterbro and Norrebro as the whole city will be coming out to see the race.
The runners will be able to spot the Little Mermaid, the Black Diamond and the Rosenborg Castle among other famous sights along the route as it loops around the city. As well as landmarks there are a whole bunch of hotspots with snack stops, live bands and other entertainment to keep the spectators happy during the day.
If you have worked up a thirst watching the runners take the city by storm then try Katz Cafe on Frederiksholms Kanal right in the centre of the city. Perfect for a quick take away coffee or a more leisurely drink and snack. For a top notch lunch try Grams Laekkerier on Halmtorvet as they serve up some of the tastiest sandwiches in Copenhagen and have free internet too.
Ristorante Cortona on Rysensteensgade is a lovely little Italian place with a great reputation. The owner personally picks out the wines to complement the menu and you will feel right at home.
