If you are in Berlin in October then a walk outside at night should be on your tourist tick list. The famous Festival of Lights will be illuminating some of the city’s most iconic buildings with spectacular light shows from 10th – 19th October. Commencing a week before is its warm up event – the Berlin Shines festival.
Get a great view from the top of an open air tour bus or see the sparkle of the lights on the Spree on a boat tour. You can see the displays from the back of an old VW Beetle car or even on a Segway for the more environmentally conscious.
Or you can just have a wander around the centre of the city and soak up the brilliantly lit atmosphere. A good place to go is Unter den Linden as the trees along the middle of this street are delicately draped with twinkling fairy lights – perfect for a romantic walk hand in hand.
In addition to the lit up buildings there will be music and art performances at various venues around Berlin.
You’ll work up an appetite after all that walking so why not head for a late supper at one of Berlin’s top eateries? For a cheap and cheerful plateful try Belushi’s on Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße. You can tuck in to a fabulous burger, catch the game on the sports channel and have a relaxed evening here.
For something a little lighter try Saigon – Green on Kantstraße. This is a Vietnamese restaurant where you can expect tasty, authentic dishes and it won’t break the bank either.
The Berlin Shines festival takes place all over the city, but one of the closest venues to our hostels is Alexanderplatz with the famous TV Tower. From Generator Prenzlauer Berg catch the M6 tram from S LandsbergerAllee, which should take about 15 minutes. Or from Generator Berlin Mitte get the 12 to S HackescherMarkt then catch the S5, which should take less than 15 minutes.
