Fancy a good look around a famous German fortress with a big name band on stage? We have got the gig for you as legendary indie rock band, Arctic Monkeys, is playing the Spandau Citadel.
Needing almost no introduction Arctic Monkeys shot to fame in 2006 when their hit “I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor” topped the charts. It remains one of their best known songs and is a firm favourite with fans. Now with 5 albums and a string of awards they are one of the UK’s biggest groups. This gig is part of their latest world tour supporting the new album “AM”.
The Citadel in Spandau is a fierce looking structure that is now mostly a museum, art gallery and general cultural site. Built during the Renaissance in the 1500’s the fortress has survived 2 world wars and the division of Germany.
The town of Spandau is a beautiful and unspoilt place with less of the tourist bustle of Berlin. The glorious Gothic architecture of the old town just across the River Havel is a great place to kill a couple of hours before the concert.
This amazing gig is actually part of the Citadel Music Festival and throughout the summer there will be other top bands headlining here. If you are staying in the area for longer then you could see Dropkick Murphys, Lana Del Ray and Paul van Dyk plus loads more.
Getting to the citadel is pretty straightforward and only takes about half an hour by car. Alternatively, if you hop on the EC train at Berlin Hauptbahnhoff (tief), which is a little way out of the centre, it takes about the same amount of time.
