National Day Spain – Puente del Pilar
As you would expect the National Day of Spain is celebrated with vitality in Barcelona. In fact the 12th October has several significant meanings and so is always a public holiday. The first and probably foremost is the commemoration of the appearance of Nuestra Señora del Pilar to St James in Spain. This is in fact Mary Jesus’ mother and she was subsequently made into the patroness of Spain.
The second is the anniversary of the date that Columbus first arrived in the Americas. But the best reason to celebrate is that the shops are allowed to open on the holiday as it is one of the special shopping days. Often the Spanish will take an extra day’s holiday and make it into a long weekend so be prepared for plenty of festivities, street parties and fireworks (careful, there is a habit of throwing firecrackers into crowds!).
