Unlike many film festivals the LOOP Fair is exclusively dedicated to the moving picture and no trappings of creator or setting are meant to interfere with the appreciation of the art.
For one weekend in June the Hotel Catalonia Ramblas becomes a highly organised art-house cinema. The hotel is completely taken over and every room has a different film going on so the focus is exclusively on the art and not the surroundings. This makes the viewings extremely intimate and you will feel like you are part of the video.
Although the main focus is on the films there are some other events at other venues that are worth a look. The Barcelona Maritime Museum (link) has a stunning exhibition “A Place Beyond the Sea” which showcases work with the theme “journey”, whether real or imagined.
You can book tickets on-line, and if you are planning to go to more than a few of the events it could be worth investing 45Euros in a LOOP Passport. This will get you free entry into the fair and more than 40 galleries, as well as special events and parties!
The Hotel Catalonia Ramblas is a lovely colonial looking building with a grand front entrance and flags over the doorway. It is actually on Carrer de Pelai which is a side street right at the end of Las Rambla, so it is pretty easy to find.
If you are looking for a cosy restaurant to feed your body after your mind has been expanded by the visual arts then just around the corner on Carrer de Sitges is Ballakano. Despite being just off La Rambla this place is surprisingly homey and friendly, and not as much of a tourist trap as you might think. The food is simple but extremely well cooked and served by smiling and helpful staff. Plus, the after dinner cocktails are amazing!
The Hotel Catalonia Ramblas is just a 25 minute walk away from Generator Barcelona, or you can hop on the subway which will take about 15 minutes.
