Don’t think you will be able to move anywhere in Barcelona on Sunday 16th March as the whole city will be up and out bright and early for the sporting event of the year – The Zurich Barcelona Marathon.
Literally thousands of runners of all ages, abilities and attire will be pounding the streets of the city. You can see people determined to beat last year’s time, professionals who are looking to win and those who are running for a good cause and for fun.
The Zurich Barcelona Marathon is very popular on the marathon circuit as it is a relatively flat and fast course which means no tedious going up and down hills to slow you down. The 42km route covers pretty much the whole of the city and passes many of the iconic buildings and tourist sites.
No matter where you decide to watch there is sure to be live entertainment nearby to help the time go by while you are waiting for your glimpse of the runners.
If you can manage to get up early you could head to the starting line at the Magic Fountain near to the hill of Montjuic Park for the beginning of the race at 8.30am. Don’t worry if you can’t make this as you can see the runners here at the end of the race too, a few hours later.
Other choice spots to watch include the long straights on Diagonal and Gran Via where the athletes can work up to a good speed. Or if you are into corners then try near the Torre Agbar where the course does a 180. The runners are likely to bunch up and you could spot a few famous sporting faces.
For somewhere a bit more central try near the statue of Columbus at the port end of La Rambla or the section that skirts the city park Ciutadella.
Wherever you go in Barcelona the atmosphere will be buzzing and you may find yourself caught up with locals and partying in the streets.
