August City Events in Hamburg
Music is our theme this month. With the arrival of summer Hamburg is still entertaining its inner child at HamburgerDom. But if that is not your thing there are literally loads of festivals and gigs for your pleasure. Check out our favourites here:
1. Dragon Boat Race at Alster Lake – 10th – 11th August
Let’s kick off with something really fun this month. The Dragon Boat Race is an annual event with a hugely competitive atmosphere and is well worth watching for some of the antics the teams get up to, both on and off the water. The venue is, of course, the beautiful Alster Lake so you shouldn’t find it too hard to get a good spot to watch the fun. Alongside the races will be food and entertainment, stalls and music stages and beer tents – so come along and join in the fun. You never know it may just inspire you to take to the water yourself.
2. Alstervergnuegen at Alster Lake – 29th August – 1st September
Staying by the Alster Lake with the Alstervergnuegen, this is a celebration of the Lake and all it means to the city of Hamburg and features loads of water events like wake boarding, rowing and boat races. The whole area around the end of the lake will be packed with festival doings. There will be a dance floor with everything from folk to salsa, cabaret and street theatre, a ferris wheel, food stalls and evening fireworks. Plus music stages with top tunes from Alexander Knappe, Boppin’B and Suzie & The Seniors among others. Need we say more, if you are in Hamburg at the end of August this is a must and will be hard to miss as it is just a short walk from Generator.
3. Romantic Nights at Tierpark Hagenbeck – Saturdays in August
If you are travelling with your loved one then this is the ideal way to woo your mate. Every Saturday in the Tierpark to the North of Hamburg you can while away a romantic evening accompanied by the sweet sound of classical music. Wander hand in hand around the lovely zoo, saunter arm in arm along wooden paths that provide secluded spots for a secret tryst. The zoo is worth a visit even if you are travelling on you own, with more than 1,800 animals in expertly crafted, open air enclosures. So treat your loved one to some quality couple time at a romantic location.
4. MS Dockville Festival at Wilhelmsburg – 16th – 18th August
Let’s heat things up a bit with some music. The MS Dockville Festival is on Europe’s largest river island, Wilhelmsburg, and some of the stages are right on the waterfront so you will get some stunning views across the city. A relative new comer to the festival scene MS Dockville has this year attracted some big names like The Lumineers, Foals and MS MR (video) – so there will no shortage of great music to dance to! The festival is also about visual arts and this comes across in the Art Camp part of the festival. Grab your best festival gear and head over there for some top tunes and totally amazing art.
5. Wacken Festival at Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein – 1st – 3rd August
Sticking with the festival theme is Europe’s largest heavy metal festival, Wacken. Another great summer music festival but with more angst and twisted heavy metal sounds. This one is about an hour’s drive north of Hamburg so why not take a few friends and a tent and make a weekend of it? With themed stages like the Headbanger Stage, True Metal Stage and Party Stage it will be easy to find the type to tunes that you love. Headline acts include metal gods Motorhead, rock royalty Alice Cooper and local ragers Rammstein. So paint your nails black, spike your hair and get your bad attitude on with Wacken.
6. Hamburg Crash Hard at Trabrennbahn – 22nd August
They say three times is the charm and that holds true with music festivals this summer in Hamburg, because here comes another one. Crash Fest is more of a hardcore and punk affair and for one day only so don’t miss out. Headlining will be classic rock group NoFX, American punk Gods Bad Religion and reggae rockers Mad Caddies plus support from German punk band Slime and psychedelic hipsters Montreal. What’s not to like? So if you like your music gritty and shouty then we’ll see you there.
7. Vattenfall Cyclassics, city wide – 25th August
If you’re into two wheels rather than four then why not check out the Vattenfall Cyclassics this month in Hamburg. The course runs through some of the most beautiful bits of Hamburg so why not travel a little to find somewhere you haven’t been before. Good spots to cheer include Grosse Elbstrasse and St Pauli Landungsbruken or further out take a picnic and spend the day at Wittenberger Park. Don’t worry if you miss the pack as they do several circuits of the course so you can catch them next time.
8. Wu Tang Clan at Stadtpark Freilichtbühne – 27th August
We love these guys and they really need no introduction. After a few years away from the spotlight the Wu-Tang Clan are back on tour so go and see arguably the best rap group ever. With a fluid line up of extreme characters the show promises to be huge. Each member has gone on to their own solo careers you are sure not know a few names even if you aren’t a fan like RZA, Masta Killa and Raekwon. Be part of history and experience one of the major influences of rap music.
9. Portland Open Air at Großmarkt – 9th – 10th August
Have we had enough music festivals yet? Of course not! Set on the Grosse Market the area will be transformed into an enchanted club organised by the top Hamburg club Uebel & Dangerous so be prepared for partying on a grand scale. Moonbootica, a DJ duo from Hamburg, are playing their set on the 10th and their latest release “Our Disco Is Louder Than Yours” says it all. Another act not to miss is Cathe a German singer/songwriter who has been gigging since the tender age of 14. So if you are looking for somewhere to party all weekend you can’t go wrong with this lot.
10. Joe Cocker at Stadtpark Freilichtbühne – 11th of August
One final gig now and it is a good one. Joe Cocker is a legend in the rock and blues world and has been going since the heady 60’s. You will already know some of his huge hits like “With A Little Help From My Friends”, “Unchain My Heart” and the biggest one of all from the blockbuster smash hot film An Officer And A Gentleman “Up Where We Belong”. Well he is still going strong and has a new record out which we love “I Come In Peace”.
