What To See During Altonale In Hamburg
For more than two weeks the streets in the Hamburg district of Altona will be thronging with people enjoying the outdoor arts festival, Altonale. While we can’t list all the events we have put together a handy guide to some of the best bits to make sure you get the most out of the festival. And most of the events are free so if you are travelling on a budget you needn’t miss out!
A festival wouldn’t be complete without a street parade and the one in Altonale does not disappoint. Amazing costumes and acrobats perform along the streets of this historic suburb as well as music stages with all sorts of different music as a backdrop. Even if you don’t see anything else during Altonale you cannot miss this event.
A big part of the festival is to promote the arts so head down to the design fair on Bahrenfelder Street to see some brand new and innovative designs. With everything from jewellery and fashion to furniture, bags, ceramics, printed fabrics to interior and product design many from local designers, you can expect some really interesting pieces to see. There will also be food stalls to tempt your appetite – we can only see pluses.
Speaking of food, if you are a bit of a foodie and love to try new things then head to the Altona Served at the Mercado on Ottenser Main Road. You will be treated to top local chefs doing cooking demos and talks and you can even taste the results as well as sample their restaurant food. There will be cooking classes for budding chefs and a cocktail school if you fancy a liquid lunch. Dig in!
Pick Up a Bargain at the Flea Market
One of the highlights of the festival is the street flea market on the final weekend. It will be easy to find as it is in Republic Square right outside the Altona Town Hall. Over the years the flea market has grown and is now a major attraction in itself. There is something truly awesome about wandering around a street market with the delicious smells of food stalls and freshly brewed coffee mixing with the sounds of traders touting their wares and music in the background. We will definitely be there to browse and maybe pick up something unique.
Walk the Green Mile
In an effort to do their bit for the environment Altonale has introduced the Green Mile. This is like a great big green festival with companies selling all sorts of green ideas and stuff. So if you, like us, are interested in saving the planet this is well worth a look.
Film and Theatre
During the whole festival there will be special screenings and plays on at the Altona cinemas and theatres. So get your culture fix why not check out something new in on the big screen?
A Bunch of Bands
It wouldn’t be a festival without a load of music stages and bands. You will find performers just hanging out in the street and many will do their set unplugged on the side of the road. The best time to catch the music will be at the street party for the whole of the final weekend. We will see you there.
