June City Events in Copenhagen
The big gig in June is the huge Roskilde Festival just outside Copenhagen. Also why don’t you take a tempting dip in the harbour, or rock out at Copenhell? Check out just what’s on offer in Copenhagen this month:
1. Roskilde festival at Roskilde – 29th June – 7th July
Roskilde has quickly proved itself able to sit among the big boys of summer festivals like Glastonbury and Primavera Sound. With a huge line-up of top rock and pop names covering all music genres you will not be disappointed. More amazing bands and acts than you can shake a stick at will be there for your entertainment like Rihanna, Slipknot and Queens of the Stone Age. For electronic music head to the Apollo Stage, Pavilion Junior is for the rock gods of tomorrow so catch some up and coming talent, Gloria has a more chilled out, off beat atmosphere. Of course, the Orange Stage is the enduring heart of Rosklide where the biggest acts strut their stuff. We don’t need to tell you what an awesome time you will have, see you there!
2. CPHSAND 2013 – Ofelia Beach – All Month
Did you ever love to make sandcastles as a child? We did too and now you can watch as sand sculptors take sandcastle building to a whole new level. The theme for CPHSAND this year is “Myths and Legends” and some of the world’s most talented sand artists will be creating images from Icelandic sagas to Greek Myths. You can even try your hand at a bit of sand sculpting yourself if you feel inspired. There is a cafe that opens all day if you want to sit with a coffee and watch the masters at work. And the best bit is that if you have a CopenhagenCard (link here?) it is free to get in.
3. Robin Hood at The Royal Theatre – All Month
The legend of the hero, who robbed the rich to give to the poor, returns as part of the Royal Theatre Ulvedalene programme. This is the open air production of Robin Hood that takes place in the huge Dyrehaven Park just north of Copenhagen not far from Bakken, the theme park. So if you are in the mood to swash your buckle, swoon at the love story, laugh at a few bits of comedy and boo the bad guys, go and see this full on production.
4. Nabiha & Shaka Loveless at Tivoli – 14th June
How about some music now? If you like R&B, soul and reggae then this gig is a must. As part of the Fridays Rock season at Tivoli you can see two of Denmark’s biggest R&B singers performing together for free (if you have a CopenhagenCard). Both Nabiha and Shaka Loveless are just starting to get some international recognition so richly deserved. And even if you do not speak Danish you will still find you feet tapping to Nabiha & Shaka’s own brand of laid back beats.
5. Copenhagen Photo Festival, city wide – 6th – 16th June
If you are travelling around Copenhagen during June you will be treated to a unique photo festival. The best and brightest of Denmark’s photographers will be displaying their art for free in metro trains, in major streets in the city and at the town hall square. This is a chance to see some of the top names in the business and what they are doing as well as some of the newest of new talent. As well as the stunning pictures there will be a series of artist talks, screenings and lectures about Nordic Contemporary Photography. So keep your eyes wide open for some amazing photographic art across the city.
6. Thorvaldsens Plads Antique Market at Gammel Strand – Every Friday and Saturday
Now for something a little more relaxed, why not do a spot of shopping at one of Copenhagen’s finest antique markets? If you are looking for a unique souvenir of your stay in Copenhagen then this is the place to go. You will find unusual pieces of all kinds like vintage fashion, antique curios, Danish designed pieces of art and jewellery. Or you could just wander round and soak up the happy atmosphere with a delicious treat to munch from one of the food stalls or sit at a nearby cafe and rest your feet. The market is right in the heart if the old town with lovely views of Christiansborg Palace, Thorvaldsen’s Museum and the Palace Church.
7. 3 Doors Down at VEGA – 8th June
You are guaranteed a great night out at VEGA and if you are into indie punk rock why not go and see 3 Doors Down here? This is a return visit for the American band and it promises to top last year’s amazing gig. You probably know their debut hit single “Kryptonite” which sent them to the top of the US charts. The band have been touring for the last couple of years, with some big names like ZZ Top and Gretchen Wilson, and have also released a “Greatest Hits” album which is well worth a listen.
8. Harbour Bathing at Islands Brygge – From 15th June
Do you fancy a refreshing dip? The Harbour Bathing opens at Islands Brygge in Copenhagen from the 15th June. A special area of the harbour has been fenced off and used for swimming as part of the continual renovation of the area. It is a great way to beat the summer heat – although, we warn you it’s certainly not tropical! If you are a bit of a show off then try the high jump platform and make some shapes as you dive into the water. If you are not a swimmer then don’t worry as there are two shallow pools so you can just dip your toes. Or you can spread put a towel, watch the action and catch some rays on the side. So bring your bathers and give it a try.
9. Danish FIM Speedway Grand Prix at Parken – 29th June
One for biker boys and chicks now. The Danish FIM Speedway Grand Prix will have you jumping out of your seat. Each heat has four riders with colours red, blue, white and yellow/black so it is easy to see the positions and who is winning. If you follow the speedway you may know the winner of last year’s final was Australian rider Jason Crump who was world champion three times. Hot contenders though are Chris Holder, last year’s world champion, Nicki Pedersen, home advantage, and Greg Hancock, twice world champion if you fancy a flutter.
10. Copenhell at Refshaleøen – 14th – 15th June
Calling all goths and metal heads for a head-banging, moshpit, rock-fest head to Copenhell this June. The island of Refshaleøen turns into an enclave of the dark underworld as it is invaded by some of the biggest heavy metal and goth bands in the world. See Alice in Chains, back from a 10 year hiatus with a scorching new single, King Diamond, Down, Testament and local boys Fall Of Pantheon, who have released their first album. So get your black face paint and nail varnish out and get down there!
