Light Up Your Life at Berlin’s Festival Of Lights
Berlin can be a beautiful city at night – between the brightly lit Friedritchstrasse and the waxy yellow glow of the streets away from Mitte where you find the cosy local bars overflowing, you could be forgiven for thinking Berlin is always a festival of light. How wrong you’d be however!
And yet at the end of October Berlin will burst into colour as the Berlin Festival of Light bathes the city in a variety of bright new clothing. Light artists from around the world gather to put on a show on buildings which are usually quite impressive enough by themselves!
But there’s more to all of this than a pretty city keeping the lights on – and here’s our favourite bits:
If you’re a keen runner, an interested jogger or even an aspirational speed-walker then there are few prettier times to take a gentle jog around Berlin. Join a group of hi-vis swaddled runners for an amble along the Spree and through Mitte to take in sights such at the Berlin Cathedral, the Richstag and Postdammerplatz.
The Light ship
Take a cruise down the river Spree and take in the sights of Berlin lit up for the Festival of Light. You can even have dinner on the Light Cruise if you want to make a long evening of it.
Other Tours Of the Festival of Light
If you fancied something a little slower-paced than the runners you can always join a walking tour – and while these tours will usually take in the major sights of the city, they might be a bit vanilla for you. Other options for lit up tours include bicycle taxis (which are lit up themselves!), horse drawn carriage tours and even Segway tours – if you fancied doing something just a little bit silly for the evening.
Climb Up For A Better View
If you’d like to see the remains of the Berlin wall lit up from a height – and have some fun getting there are few better ways to do so than at MountMitte. From the highest (and most challenging level) you can see the wall lit up in all its glory. Additionally, once you’ve finished larking about on the various swinging platforms, sky bikes and climbing walls there’s soup and drinks to be had at Berlin’s own little slice of Barbados – BeachMitte. Perfect for a chilled evening by the fire, or a great way to get things started.
Some Light Jazz
If you like a little Jazz then there are few better evenings to be in Berlin – as long as you get a ticket to Jazz in the Ministry Gardens. The show is known as one of the highlights (see what we did there?) of the year and coincides with the festival of light. If you’ve been put off by the usual tourist tracks this is a superb way to get to know the city!
