Generator Guide To Gay Pride Across Europe
June is traditionally a month to celebrate LGBT Pride in many European countries and we know how you all love a good festival. So wherever you are this month we can help you get the pick of Pride. Christopher Street Day Celebrations Germany In Germany the Pride festival is usually called Christopher Street Day. This is a reference to the famous Stonewall Riots in New York which saw an uprising of LGBT people against police on 28th June 1969. Berlin is said to be the leading gay city in Europe with events and festivals all year round. June is the highlight with the Lesbisch-schwules Stadtfest Berlin, Berlin Pride/Christopher Street Day and the alternative Kreuzberg Pride. Hamburg also celebrates CSD with all the attending festivities and fun. This year it is slightly later at the end of July with the all important parade on 3rd August. Gay is Good - UK The UK is another country that encourages equal rights and the voices of LGBT people, we love this. The biggest festival of the year is, of course, in London although other cities like Liverpool and Manchester have them as well. This year’s theme is “Love (and Marriage)” which is currently being hotly debated in the UK Government. If you are in London around the end of June then Trafalgar Square is the place to be as this is where the parade ends and there will be a huge party atmosphere here with music dancing and outrageous costumes. Dublin has its own celebrations in June with the parade, which starts at the Garden of Remembrance, on Saturday 29th June. Pre-events which will contribute funds to Dublin Pride include Glitterbomb, an outrageous Friday night out at Georges Pub, a well known gay haunt in Dublin. Also Pride Unplugged at Pantibar, which is a talent night once a month. Get the chance to see them before they become famous! Copenhagen Pride August is pride month in Copenhagen and the festival is a week of parties, talks and fun. The big parade is on 24th August and will make its way through the city from Frederiksberg Town Square to Vestergade in the centre of the city. The focus for Pride Week is the Pride Square which will be in the Radhaus square right in the heart of Copenhagen. Get your rainbow trousers on and get involved. Pride Barcelona Big, flamboyant and fun is what you would expect from Pride and that is what you get in Barcelona. Spain is a country known for tolerance and support of LGBT issues and so you can expect some huge celebrations here at the end of June. Head down to the Avenida Maria Cristina for the main festival and the end of the parade, but many clubs and bars will be having rainbow themed parties for the whole 10 day festival so you won’t miss out. Particular events to note include Pride BCN Drag Race, the Pride equivalent of a beauty contest, and the Heel Race, where runners use the most gorgeous and improbably high heels to run in instead of trainers.
